At age 54 I took up the triathlon. I had been a long time runner, but swimming and cycling as a competitive endeavor were both new to me. With swimming, I hired a coach. I had to unlearn 50 years of bad swimming habits. It paid off though. I progressed to the point where I occasionally placed in the top three in my age group. It was just the right challenge for me.
Bravo for a well said and inspiring piece! I think about looking for novelty in my life every day. I don’t always succeed but appreciate being reminded how important it is.
Not too hard and not too easy. That's the sweet spot. The important thing is to get off your ass and try to do something.
Mark's on the right track. His new thing was a similar to something he already loves, but extends it.
There's something to be said for trying things that are totally new, too. I'll bet standing on dolphin noses wasn't like anything you hadd done before.
Mine are a mix. I have a list, 100 things in 1,000 days, that has things that are easy and whimsical and things that are practically impossible. From learning a new joke to doing a full split. And a lot of in-between: Swimming the long course, 1.4 miles, neither easy nor out of the question.

Thanks, Eva!
When I walk in NYC I try to travel on blocks I don’t know, just for the novelty.

Challenges keep you alive. God bless them.
1,000 days! That's longterm planning--and certainly a challenge. But a full split at this point in life? Not gonna happen!
Hum...dearest Cathy, and greetings Mark...
For me, I would say that writing BLUNT was well outside my comfort zone, and that of most readers...(o:
