I solved my driving problems a couple of years ago. I realized that, as I was getting older, I was also becoming less of the steadfast driver I had been for decades in several parts of the world. So, I decided that the time had come when I should give it up entirely, something that was easy to do since I had never owned a car during the 47 years that I had lived in Manhattan, and only rented one when absolutely necessary. Besides, I also realized that I'd much rather be driven around than stressing out about changing lanes, finding the right exit, and finding parking spaces.
Loved the post about your beach car, Catherine! And also the fact that right now, your sons are driving your lovely Honda Insight to the theater. Thirdly, I'm riveted by your use of the word "stultifying." I too want less stress, not more. Happy holidays!
I’m new to your Substack and can see, admittedly based on a tiny sample that, at least in some ways, we are kindred spirits. I so appreciated this piece as a retiree who always worries about being on time and appreciating the simpler features of my 2017 Honda Civic.
That was fun Cathy...I'm right there with you. My 1998 Grand Cherokee was a jewel until, as you know, it got crushed from behind. I would still be driving it for all the reasons you've mentioned. And self-employment...I'm all for it.
Amen, Catherine. I drove my last car well past its carmitzvah.
Btw, I just ordered your newest novel, The Pope's Jew. I loved your last, The Polish Woman--Netflix producers, where are you?
I just saw this—inexcusably late— and want to thank you for your kind and generous words.
I love watching the snow fall and not worrying about driving in it. That’s for starters.
White Christmas! The first in maybe 20 years!
