For me ... writing is easy ... editing is hell ... because, when I write, I just let the dam burst and channel the flow on the page knowing that it can and will be revised. However, editing - either my own writing or the writing of others (mostly in translations that are handed to me by third parties) - is hell because each word will last (warts and all) once I push the "send" button, a scary proposition when I really think about it. Like NOW !!!
You're a great editor, Cathy. And a kind one. You've certainly helped me.
It's sad that future readers won't see the edits and divine the editing process. We start with an idea, an image, a riddle, and what eventually emerges is a complete essay or story, with missteps and false starts and fixes along the way. (Even if it's just combing the hair and trimming the fingernails, as you whimsically put it.)
The journey is often as interesting as the final product. Readers see the highlight reel and miss the struggle led to it.
I write to get the beast out; I revise by trimming its nails and combing its hair. GREAT LINE, Catherine!
Thanks, Joy! The line tumbled out.
Yes! Came here to say the same thing.

I’ m relieved when I “push send” because then I can go on to new things. New ones could be better.
Hope springs eternal ...

Time to write! Thank God for deadlines.
Like you, I love writing and I love editing, but for very different reasons. Here's to nail trimming and hair combing!
Words, dearest Cathy, magical little beasts that they are, are damn good playmates.
Love and hugs from we Easley's...
