With my penchant for paradox, I’ve always loved the title of the Simon and Garfunkle song and album, “The Sounds of Silence” (along with the brilliant lyrics and the haunting melody).
I think that this is one of the better Substacks that you’ve done. BTW, you can listen to your heartbeat, if it’s fairly quiet. You can go deeper, to hearing the blood move through your arteries, and, then, even more subtle pulsing. It takes time and practice, but it’s doable, even in a NYC apartment.
I'm glad that you're reading my posts and that you like this one. What you say is fascinating. I can sometimes feel my heartbeat, but I can't hear it, no matter how hard I try. To say nothing of hearing blood move!
Fabulous piece! Especially now when we're drowned in noise. Brava, Cathy.
Enjoyed this!
Thanks, Betsy. It occurs to me that if we are ill and dying after a long life, perhaps we want that final silence.
