The human condition is not always a pretty sight, but it's part of the complete package of who we are as a species. I'm not sure that whitewashing these "ignoble pleasures" will make them disappear entirely, and who needs perfection anyway? Owning one's faults is also part of our fabric, but that does not necessarily mean that we are really able to make them disappear without losing our personalities. Actually, as I grow older, I've learned to live with them without losing sleep over them ... as long as I'm not careless with the way I let them happen without my being able to totally control the way they come out. And, to go back to a previous subject, that could be another guilty pleasure as well ... :-)
While I don’t disagree with your suggestions on how to behave/respond when given a bonus or promotion at work, I feel compelled to point out that this is a gendered stereotype that females, from the ground up, are typically indoctrinated & well-trained in.
And which males are typically NOT, & in fact are typically conditioned for the opposite.
As such, at work & in business, these kind of responses, while certainly more civil & polite, work to women’s disadvantage. Unless & until that changes, I would promote a more “happy medium” - to both genders.
Ignoble Pleasures:
Thanks so much, Alicia! Folks, do read her Substacks Force Majeure and Womancake.
LOVE this post and am planning to cross post it on Womancake on Friday August 4th :)
Thank you Cathy...I do love your ruthless clarity...hugs...t
Oh this is so good! Reading it, I felt "busted" and then realized...Oh, I'm just human. Thanks for this one, Catherine and Alicia.
