Absolutely loving these. Bravo! Receiving them every week is a great break from the horrible news of the day. How do you keep coming up with such great topics?

I am now planning my annual holiday party, with theme, for my company. I try to reveal as little as possible until the day of the party to maximize the anticipation. Much more fun for everyone, but especially me!

It's wonderful to get a comment like this! Writing these every week is a break for me too. Enjoy the party -- here and with your company!

Whenever I see that word, I think of the song “Anticipation” by Carly Simon. She apparently wrote the song in 15 minutes while awaiting a date with Cat Stevens. It became a commercial jingle for Heinz Ketchup during my pre-adult years. My favorite line in the song though is at the end, when she sings “These are the good old days.”

I did consider "name-checking" that great song! That last line is simple yet complex. In the present, she's considering the future, when she will look back to her past. And so, in the present, she can appreciate it fully.

That was generous of you to be so kind to the writer who wanted to unsubscribe! It speaks to your wisdom and experience, and the way that you see the world. I've always secretly thought that the secret to life is a balance between having something to look forward to, and living completely in the moment, without any expectations. But anticipating giving a gift to a loved one is uniquely pleasurable, that's for sure!

Well, it was an editor who wanted to unsubscribe, and I want her to keep reading me and accepting future pitches (they pay pretty well). Anticipation also in . . . filling Christmas stockings! I just got the first stocking present and know Zadie will love it. Grinning at the thought!
